The Qatar National Vision 2030 recognises the need to protect Qatar’s natural environment.
And as Qatar’s largest offshore operator and a responsible and sustainable operator, we continuously strive to improve our environmental performance and to consider and minimise the impact of our operations to preserve this valuable asset, in particular, the rich biodiversity of Qatar’s offshore environment.
We have succeeded in reducing flared gas from our offshore operations by more than 90% since 2007 and greenhouse gases by over 50% since 2007.
Maersk Oil Qatar is committed to playing an active and leading research role into marine biodiversity. In addition to conducting routine operational monitoring and sampling from all our offshore facilities, the offshore marine environment is one of the three core research themes of our global research and technology centre in Qatar.
Since 2010 we have been closely collaborating with Qatar’s Ministry of Environment on the Qatar Whale Shark Research Project, the first of its kind in Qatar.
By gathering data and monitoring the Whale Sharks which aggregate in huge numbers around Al-Shaheen’s offshore platforms to feed, we can learn more about the behavior and breeding habits of these mammals and how to preserve their natural habitat.
